What to look forward to this March

Guyana is a melting pot of different cultures that fuses together to make us unique. In March, Lent has already begun for Christians and the Hindu holiday Phagwah or Holi is celebrated on March 7th. While Phagwah is a Hindu religious holiday, it is definitely one that is enjoyed by Guyanese of any religion, making it a true testament of our diverse and unified culture.

There are also non holiday observances such as International Women’s Day on March 8th and the first ever observance of International Zero Waste Day on March 30th.

For those of you lucky enough to be visiting Lethem for Rupununi Rodeo or Bartica for Bartica Regatta during the Easter weekend in April, we’ve put together some tips to ensure you’re prepared for your trip.

Phagwah or Holi

Phagwah or Holi is the Hindu Festival of Colours which celebrates the triumph of good over evil, fertility and good harvest. This festival allows persons to break the normal social restrictions by bringing people together regardless of status, age, and even religion, as Guyanese from all religions partake in the custom of playing Phagwah.

It is customary to prepare and share Indian sweets treats such as gulaab jamoon, gojha, gul-gula, mettai and others. People will wear white and celebrate by throwing dyes, powders and even water on each other. If you plan to go out on this day, please note that you may not be spared of getting powdered or wet.

In recent years The Guyana National Stadium has become to meeting point to enjoy this holiday. Please note that no meat or alcohol is permitted so as to be respectful of this religious holiday.

Planning for Rupununi Rodeo: April 8th & 9th

Planning for Bartica Regatta

The Bartica Regatta is an annual Easter holiday event held in the mining town of Bartica, a town at the confluence of the Mazaruni, Cuyuni and Essequibo rivers. People from all over Guyana travel to enjoy a wide array of activities including water sports, cricket, boxing, soccer, parties, the Miss Bartica Regatta Pageant, and finally the Power Boat racing competitions.

It is recommended that you start booking accommodation if you plan to attend this event. Some options for accommodation are:

To get to Bartica you can drive using personal transportation from Georgetown to the Stelling at Parika. This drive is approximately one and a half hours; be sure to check the opening and closing of Demerara Harbor Bridge. You will then need to travel by boat or by ferry. Be sure to follow these tips:

  • Make sure you have sunscreen and insect repellent if you are overnighting

  • The walk from the Stelling to the main event venue (Golden Beach) is only 10 mins so there’s no need to take a taxi.

  • Book hotels one month in advance and ferry tickets two weeks in advance.

Zero Waste Day: March 30th

The International Day of Zero Waste aims to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns, support the societal shift towards circularity and raise awareness about how zero-waste initiatives contribute to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

A zero-waste approach entails responsible production, consumption and disposal of products in a closed, circular system. This means that resources are reused or recovered as much as possible and that we minimize the pollution to air, land or water.

In Guyana you can play your part by supporting these businesses that aim to reduce waste:

  • H2O Labs Guyana: provides water treatment options to reduce the need for purchasing of bottled water. They also provide water delivery services for bulk water or the commonly used 5 gallon bottles.

  • Jars Zero Waste Shop: Guyana’s first zero waste store, they sell unwrapped products that don’t contribute to plastic waste which is becoming an issue in Guyana. You can also recycle your clean cans at the store!

  • TidyUp Liquid Detergent: offers a wide range of products available in bulk all over Guyana at their refill centers. Just walk with your container and fill up on laundry detergent, degreaser, antibacterial hand soap and much more.
