Celebrating Easter in Guyana

Easter is one of the major Christian holidays in Guyana.

Visitors to Guyana may be surprised to learn that most businesses are closed during Easter celebration. Beginning with Good Friday, the sacred day of Christ’s crucifixion, local churches hold worship services to celebrate the death and resurrection of their Jesus.

On Good Friday Christians don’t consume meat and will partake in the preparation and eating of Cross Buns, which has become a Guyanese tradition and staple. Cross buns are best eaten with a slice of Anchor Cheddar Cheese alongside a cold Cream Soda beverage mixed with condensed milk.

Kite flying is popular in Guyana with kite flying competitions at some venues. Sunday and Monday of Easter weekend, most families pack picnic baskets or order baskets and gather at creeks and various parks around Guyana. Soaring kites of every shape and a kaleidoscope of scintillating colors fill the sky, especially along the Atlantic seacoast on these two days.
