In Guyana, Easter is a religious occasion celebrated with church services and colourful, family-filled weekend where kite flying and picnicking take center stage, especially in the National Park and along the Georgetown seawall.

From Good Friday to Easter Monday, families flock to green spaces with homemade or purchased kites and picnic spreads.

Fitness tip: If you’re a regular park-goer for jogging or yoga, it’s best to avoid the park from Friday to Monday, as it gets very crowded.

Please note: The National Park Commission may impose a small entrance fee over the weekend to help with cleaning and maintenance costs.

Celebrated as May Day, this national holiday recognizes the contributions of Guyana’s workers. Expect the Ministry of Labour and trade unions to lead marches through central Georgetown, followed by public addresses and community gatherings.

Arrival Day honours the arrival of indentured labourers from India and the Portuguese, whose descendants form an essential part of Guyana’s multicultural identity. This observance commemorates the historical and extensive indentureship period that began in 1834. May 5 also marks the anniversary of the arrival of our East Indian ancestors who reached these shores on this day in 1838, while on May 3, 1835, the first batch of Portuguese arrived.

Communities across the country observe the holiday with cultural exhibitions, live music, and traditional foods that reflect Indian and Portuguese influences.

Experience to try: Attend a cultural fair, sample seven curry, dhal puri, or Portuguese garlic pork, and catch a tassa drumming performance or folk dance.

A day of national pride, Independence Day celebrates Guyana’s emancipation from British colonial rule in 1966. Public buildings are decorated in the national colours—red, gold, green, black, and white—and events are held nationwide.

From flag-raising ceremonies to cultural shows, fireworks, and family fun days, it’s a vibrant time to be in the country.
