Eid al-Adha, known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is a significant holiday celebrated by Muslims in Guyana and around the world. It commemorates the story of Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, a tale shared across Abrahamic religions.

How is Eid al-Adha observed?

The day begins with Muslims in Guyana performing Ghusl, the ritual purification, followed by the early morning congregational prayers held at mosques throughout the country. Dressed in their finest attire, men, women, and children join together in prayer, which is followed by the sermon that recounts the story of Ibrahim and the importance of sacrifice in Islam.

Post prayers, the act of Qurbani is carried out, adhering to Islamic laws on animal welfare and slaughter. The meat is then divided into three parts: one for the family, one for friends and relatives, and one for the poor and needy. This distribution highlights the underlying principle of Eid al-Adha: sharing with others, especially those less fortunate.

In addition to the religious observances, the day is filled with visits to family and friends, exchanging greetings of “Eid Mubarak,” and sharing meals. Special dishes are prepared from the meat of the sacrificed animal, and these gatherings often turn into festive, joyous occasions.

Eid al-Adha also sees a surge in charitable activities across Guyana. Many Muslims donate both money and time to charitable causes, helping to uplift the less fortunate and reinforce the bonds within the community.

To all our expat community members planning to experience the thrill of the ICC T20 World Cup matches at the Guyana National Stadium, please take note of the following traffic arrangements.

These measures are designed to ensure smooth traffic flow and enhance your experience on the following dates and times:

Sunday, June 02, 2024, at 10:30 AM – West Indies vs. Papua New Guinea

Monday, June 03, 2024, at 8:30 PM – Afghanistan vs. Uganda

Wednesday, June 05, 2024, at 7:30 PM – Papua New Guinea vs. Uganda

Friday, June 07, 2024, at 7:30 PM – New Zealand vs. Afghanistan

Saturday, June 08, 2024, at 8:30 PM – West Indies vs. Uganda

Thursday, June 27, 2024, at 10:30 AM – Semi-Final 2

Traffic Flow Adjustments:

Traffic along the East Bank of Demerara will be directed accordingly, with specific lanes designated for stadium access and through traffic.

– General stadium parking is available via the second access opposite GuyOil. Special entrances for VIPs and officials are set via Greenfield Road.

– To avoid congestion, no parking will be allowed on the Eastern and Western Carriageways between Bagotstown Public Road and Providence Public Road near the Rubis Gas Station.

Purchasing Parking Tickets:

– It is advised to purchase parking tickets before game days to facilitate a smooth flow of traffic.

Carpooling:

– Patrons are encouraged to carpool or share a ride to reduce congestion.

Alternate Routes:

– Alternate routes have been established via Mandela to Eccles Interlink to Heroes Highway, with various exits available for smoother travel to and from the stadium.

Post-Game Exit Strategy:

– Managed traffic flows will be in place, with police presence to guide patrons from the general car park to major exits, ensuring a smooth departure.

Construction Notices:

– Please be aware of ongoing construction at several roads, including Dump Site Road and Red Road. These areas might affect travel times.

The Traffic Department of Guyana Police Force urges all attendees to follow the set traffic arrangements, utilize alternate routes as necessary, and adhere strictly to the directions of the traffic police. Let’s enjoy the games and ensure a hassle-free travel experience!
