Welcome to June! We’re halfway through 2023 and in Guyana this means we’re in the midst of the rainy season, but expect some bright, sunny days since the rainy season is coming to an end.
Schools will be officially closing soon. During this July-August break, there’s so much fun and educational activities for kids and adults. Be sure to read and click the links for more information.

Eid In Guyana: Eid ul Adha – 28th June 2023
Eid ul Adha celebration in Guyana includes sacrificing animals as Ibrahim did. One-third of the meat is to be given to the poor, another third shared with friends and family, and the final third kept by the one sacrificing the animal. Islamic law allows cows, sheep, goats, and camels to be sacrificed for Eid ul Adha, but as camels are not common in Guyana, cattle and sheep account for most of the sacrificial meat.
In Georgetown, both Muslims and non-Muslims alike are welcome to get shares of meat at the MYO (Muslim Youth Organization) on Woolford Avenue. There are prayer services early in the morning, then a “kutbah“ (Islamic sermon), and the halal slaughtering process of dozens of bulls, cows, and sheep, besides the mere distribution of the meat.

A healthy outside starts with what you put inside your body. Get your fresh fruits, vegetables and meat from Guyfresh Trading on Forshaw Street.

What to look forward to in June
June 3rd: Shasha Designs presents Moonlight Stories The Lost City at the Marriott Hotel.
This event is a celebration of Guyana’s creative industry and culture and features art installation and a fashion show by some of Guyana’s top designers.
Tickets cost GYD $15,000 per person and include a free cocktail and glass of wine served during the cocktail hour.

Plan to keep your kids positively occupied during the summer break
Located in the heart of Guyana, the Iwokrama Rainforest is a nature reserve that is one of only four pristine tropical forests in the world, offering a sustainable eco tourism experience. The Iwokrama forest and the Rupununi wetlands and savannahs offer visitors exceptional natural and cultural experience set in a learning context.
The Iwokrama Forest is a vast wilderness of nearly one million acres – a protected area and homeland of the Makushi people who have used the forest for generations.
The main attraction is the Iwokrama Canopy Walk at 154 metre (505 ft.) which offers a unique experience in the region and envelopes you in the jungle’s mid-level canopy through a series of suspension bridges and decks from heights of up to 30 metres (98 ft.).
Other activities include trail walks, jaguar spotting, Kurupukari Falls, hike to Turtle mountain, bird watching, canoe rides and much more.
It is possible to get there by hired minivan or private vehicle, but many visitors fly in to Surama Village or Annai Village (Rock View Lodge) from Georgetown and then drive 2 hours to our location. Chartered aircraft can land at Fair View village, a mere 2km away from the Iwokrama River Lodge.
You can choose to spend a few days or do a one day tour offered by any of the registered tour operators, like Rainforest Tours (offer seen to the right). Their one day tour costs $64,000 GYD per person and operates on Saturdays only.
